Northern Rivers National Events
As we delve into the rich tapestry of Australia's Northern Rivers region, we uncover a plethora of festivals and annual events that attract visitors from across Australia and beyond. From music festivals to literary events, from kite festivals to agricultural shows, there's something for everyone in this part of New South Wales.
At the top of the calendar is the legendary Byron Bay Bluesfest, a five-day extravaganza that takes place over the Easter weekend. Established in 1990, Bluesfest has become one of the premier blues and roots music events in the world, attracting some of the biggest names in the industry year after year. Recent headliners have included Bob Dylan, Santana, Paul Simon, and Robert Plant, amongst others.
Another hugely popular music festival in the region is Splendour in the Grass, which takes place in July. Originally held at Byron Bay's Belongil Fields, the festival has since moved to the North Byron Parklands, near Yelgun. Splendour has grown rapidly since its inception in 2001, and now attracts around 30,000 music fans from across the country.
If literature is more your thing, then head to the Byron Writers Festival, which takes place in August. This three-day event brings together some of Australia's most renowned writers, journalists, and thinkers to discuss and debate the burning issues of the day. Past speakers have included Germaine Greer, Tim Winton, and Stan Grant.
The Bangalow Music Festival is another event that music lovers will not want to miss. Held each year in August, this classical music festival draws some of the finest musicians from around the globe to perform in the charming village of Bangalow.
Those interested in the agricultural side of things will be thrilled by the annual North Coast National Agricultural Show, which takes place in Lismore each year. This three-day event includes livestock shows, equestrian events, agricultural exhibitions, and a dizzying array of food and drink stalls.
Meanwhile, the Lismore Lantern Parade is a spectacle not to be missed. This annual event takes place in June and sees thousands of people carrying hand-made lanterns through the streets of Lismore, illuminating the night sky with an explosion of color and light.
And for a truly unique experience, check out the Nimbin MardiGrass. This annual celebration, which takes place in May, sees the town of Nimbin transformed into a vibrant hub of music, art, and activism. The event is centered around a protest against the criminalisation of cannabis, and includes a cannabis law reform rally, a parade, live music, and a Hemp Olympix competition.
These are just a handful of the many fantastic events that take place in the Northern Rivers region each year. From music to literature, from agriculture to activism, there is always something happening in this vibrant and diverse corner of Australia.
